Improvisation is rarely discussed or practiced in Afro-Latin dance, but it is technique like any other.
In music, it is essential to understand the parameters in which we are allowed to play, in order to have an appropriate and musically valid moment of "on the spot creation." Without understanding the key you're working in or the mode and scale being used, we have no concept of the notes and combinations that will make musical sense.
The same is true in our dance.
In this Intensive, we will experiment with variations of a structure that will more clearly define the space in which we are playing. We will start with a warmup of improvisational exercises, followed by a detailed breakdown and background on how to approach improvisation as a part of our practice.
The lesson will consist of a series of physical and musical variations of the Mambo basic to help us further understand the process of improvisation and the options available to us.
Enrollment for Improvisation Techniques will be open until a new session is released. Once enrolled, enjoy unlimited access through your course library!
